Superman , the new big-budget opus about the legendary superhero, released Friday, July 11 in the United States, soared to the top of the North American box office with excellent takings amounting to $122 million, according to estimates, Sunday, July 13, by the specialist firm Exhibitor Relations.

" This is an exceptional national launch for the seventh installment of a superhero story that has been filmed for over 75 years ," commented David Gross, an analyst at the specialist firm Franchise Entertainment Research.

With David Corenswet as the new Superman/Clark Kent, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois, director James Gunn " chose not to rely on big stars ," but " the storytelling and direction get the job done " for this latest installment from DC Studios, the superhero division of Warner Bros. Discovery.

With an estimated $122 million in theaters in the United States and Canada from Friday to Sunday, Superman surpasses last weekend's opening of Jurassic World: Renaissance ($91.5 million). This weekend, the Universal-produced film, starring Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey, ranks second with $40 million.

F1 , the racing movie starring Brad Pitt as an aging former Formula 1 driver returning to the track, came in third with $13 million. Next came Dragons, the remake of the animated film from Universal Studios and DreamWorks ($7.8 million), and Elio , the latest release from Disney/Pixar Studios ($3.9 million).
